What grade do you need on your final?

You need three numbers: your current course percentage, your desired course percentage, and the percentage of the course grade assigned to the final.

The formula

Convert the final's weight into a decimal. A final worth 30% of the course grade has a weight of 0.30. The work already completed then has a weight of 0.70.

Required final score = (desired grade − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight

Worked example

Imagine your current course grade is 82%, your desired course grade is 85%, and the final is worth 30%.

  1. Completed-work contribution: 82 × 0.70 = 57.4.
  2. Points still needed: 85 − 57.4 = 27.6.
  3. Required final score: 27.6 ÷ 0.30 = 92.

You would need approximately 92% on the final to finish with an 85% course grade.

How to interpret the answer

  • Between 0% and 100%: the target is mathematically achievable under the entered assumptions.
  • Above 100%: the target requires extra credit, a grading adjustment, or a different assumption.
  • At or below 0%: the target is already secured mathematically, although completing the final may still be required.

Common mistakes to avoid

Enter the final's share of the entire course grade—not the number of questions or points printed on the exam. Also confirm that your current percentage covers only work graded so far. Some learning-management systems already treat ungraded work as zero or calculate categories using special weighting.

If your course includes several remaining assignments, replace the final-exam weight with the combined weight of all remaining work only if you are estimating one average score across that work.
